This hydroponic technique uses a woven mat as the growing surface. The baby green lettuce plants shown in the picture are grown on a mat made of natural fiber.

When plants are grown properly, they produce shallow, white roots as seen in this next photo. This is the underside of a woven mat, rolled up after the four-inch-tall baby green lettuce plants were harvested.
